Don't Ever Buy A Samsung LNT4665F - Review

While the Samsung LNT4665F may be the best selling 46" television on the internet, that doesn't mean it's a good fit for everyone. There are a number of serious flaws with the TV, that every consumer should be aware of. If your one of those brave souls willing to buy a big ticket item online without setting foot in a bricks and mortar store, then you really need to pay extra special attention. So, lets be both painfully critical and honest about this LCD TV.

There have been a number of reported problems with the HDMI inputs for the LNT4665F. In case your wondering what HDMI is, it stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. HDMI is used for sending high definition signals to your TV. That would include game consoles, HD-DVD / Blu-Ray players, digital cable boxes, and HDTV camcorders / still cameras. Basically anything that is not your basic standard coaxial television signal. The most annoying HDMI issue is an intermittent blank screen. The TV screen just goes black occasionally while your watching something coming through the HDMI input. As unsettling as this problem may be, the worst part is, that Samsung can't seem to decide on what the correct solution is. Sometimes, they replace the motherboard, sometimes they upgrade the software, and sometimes they just blame it on a consumers faulty HDMI input device (usually a cable box). While this is not a problem with every LNT4665F, for the unfortunate few, it can be a real headache. If your really committed to buying this LCD, you may at least want to check with Samsung to see if they have a solid solution to this issue. Talking with customer support before buying any product can be a really smart consumer move. It also gives you an idea of how the company treats their customers before you shell out money on their product.

Clouding (sometimes called mura) can be a problem with several of the Samsung LCD models including the LNT4665F. Clouding appears on your screen as a patch of lighter color than would be normal for the scene being viewed. It's most noticeable on darker scenes. While there can be a number of causes for clouding, the most common is an uneven thickness of the liquid crystal material in the TV. A very difficult problem to fix. If the clouding is really bad, the only real solution, is to replace the TV. Some owners have reported that wiping the clouds with a dry cloth, can move them off the screen. Other suggestions (my least favorite) have suggested that a fan blowing on the TV vents will alleviate the problem.

While not really an issue with the TV, if your ordering online, or having your TV delivered then I would be remiss if I didn't talk about shipping problems. The bezel around the Samsung LNT4665F is not made of the strongest stuff. It's basically a pretty thin plastic housing, that can be susceptible to cracking, scratching and splitting even in the hands of the most gentle delivery person. To make things worse, the packaging used by Samsung for these TVs, is not the strongest stuff. The bottom line is this, take a few minutes when your TV arrives, unpack it from the carton, inspect for any obvious damage, and plug it in. Yes, this may mean making the delivery guy/gal wait a little bit. Offer them a coffee while they wait, if it makes you feel better. More importantly though, it may also save you hours on the phone with customer support.

The ASUS Transformer has an impressive 720 HD video recording capability, making videos very clear to view.The iPad, on the other hand, makes it impossible to record any videos with.

Portability

The ASUS Transformer has a measurement of 271 x 171 x 13mm and weighs 680 grams.

The iPad has dimensions of 42.8 x 189.7 x 13.4mm and weighed 680 grams for Wi-Fi connectivity only, and 730 grams for both Wi-Fi + 3G connectivity.

Battery Life

The ASUS Transformer has a battery life of up to 10 hours, but with a keyboard dock attached, battery life is increased up to 16 hours. The iPad only has 10 hours battery life.

Price

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is sold at 9 for the 16GB. The optional keyboard dock costs an additional 0. The iPad had a retail price of 9 for the Wi-Fi only version, and 9 for Wi-Fi + 3G version, which is a far cry from other tablet PCs of today.

The Verdict

Clearly, it shows that the original iPad is no match with the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. In many aspects like camera, connectivity, portability, battery life and most especially price, Asus has managed to beat Apple from its former glory.

Benefits of HDMI (high definition multimedia interface)

1. Industry manufacturers like HDMI because it uses a system of interfaces that stop media pirating. This system is called HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). This system works on encrypted (read copywrite) DVD Video, DVD Audio, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

HDMI also carries both audio and video in one cable which will eventually allow manufacturers to have less connectors and just one standard in/out interface.

2. Customers like HDMI because there is less confusion in the connection process. Just one cable connects the DVD player to the receiver or television. Almost anything that uses digital audio/visual, such as game consoles, Blu-ray players, DVD players, etc. can connect in this uncompressed (faster) format.

3. One other good basis for The HDMI interface is CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) which allows a connected device to control another connected device when necessary. This is most obvious when you can use the TV remote to control all connected devices.

Drawbacks: HDMI (high definition multimedia interface)

1. Owners of older equipment may not have HDMI interfaces. Instead they will have separate audio and video interfaces. These customers will need to do workarounds to adapt to HDMI to their systems or buy new equipment. These workarounds could include buying cables that have an HDMI on one end and a DVI (Digital Video Interface) on the other end to send video to a monitor or television using a DVI connector. This would allow a user to send video from an HDMI source to a DVI receptor, even though it will not send the audio because DVI does not support audio.

2. To send audio to a non-HDMI audio/video component, the user will need to send it via previous methods such as s/PDIF (Fiber Optics) or RCA cables.

3. Some confusion exists due to the numbering system on HDMI connections. Starting with 1.0, the capabilities of HDMI cables and HDMI equipment varies. The standard has moved up to HDMI 1.4a which includes 3D and deep color. Each implementation of the HDMI standard in cables has a corresponding implementation in audio/visual equipment. If you are buying cables or equipment, make sure that the equipment matches the cables. Newer cables are backward compatible making it an easy choice - always go to the highest level (number) of cable. It may not help, but it won't hurt.

In summary, review your audio visual system and see what connections work with your major pieces such as television, amplifier, disc players and cable/satellite connections. If you are buying new equipment, make sure the new equipment will work with the old equipment. Your Audio/Video system is like an eco system: change one thing and the rest will need to adjust. The most obvious upgrade path may be with your television. Be sure a new TV comes with HDMI connectors as well as the older connectors necessary to work with older amplifiers or disc players. The internet is a great place for quick information on what you need.

Finally, you may want to consult with your reseller. Take a picture of the back and front of all the equipment in your home theatre. Be sure that the connections are clear in the photograph. The reseller should be able to help you. But be careful of price. A good HDMI cable shouldn't cost more than about and a basic 1.4 cable should do everything you need, at the time of this writing, including Ethernet. If the numbers go past 1.4, just get the highest number, they are backward compatible and don't cost much.

The electronics industry is now getting away form the use of numbers and advises customers to check the equipment they need to connect and match that to the cable they buy.

Don't get sucked into "giant" this or "future proof" that - it's just selling technique that could cost you a lot of unnecessary dollars. Even testers that take connections off and on test equipment rarely find any problems with the least expensive cables.
